The New England Journal of Medicine (新英格兰医学杂志, NEJM)由美国麻省医学会( Massachusetts Medical Society)主办和出版，创刊于1812年，是世界上连续出版时间最久的医学期刊，最初为季刊，刊名为《新英格兰医学与外科期刊》，1828年更名为《波士顿医学与外科期刊》并改为周刊出版，20世纪30年代更名为《新英格兰医学杂志》。目前该刊已出版到第361卷，每年发行52期，年页码数约为5200页，主要刊登重要的原始性研究成果、临床发现以及观点，注重实用性和临床实践指导。
据2008年度JCR，NEJM的影响因子为50.017，仅次于综述性期刊CA-Cancer J Clin, 在非综述类期刊中处于遥遥领先的地位(影响因子位居第2的非综述类期刊是J Am Med Assoc，31.718)。
NEJM的特色可大致概括为：
(1) 栏目丰富 据NEJM网站的“Author Center”介绍，该刊的定期-不定期栏目计有23个，可分为四大类，具体为：Original Research (Original Articles, Special Articles); Clinical Cases (Brief Reports, Clinical Problem-Solving, Case Records of the Massachusetts General Hospital); Review Articles (Clinical Practice, Clinical Therapeutics, Current Concepts, Drug Therapy, Mechanisms of Disease, Medical Progress); Other Submissions (Editorials, Perspective, Sounding Board, Clinical Implications of Basic Research, Special Reports, Health Law, Ethics, and Human Rights, Health Policy Reports, Occasional Notes, Letters to the Editor, Book Reviews, Images in Clinical Medicine, Filler Photographs).
NEJM拥有自己的独立网站，在线内容十分丰富，免费阅读、下载的全文和摘要可分别追溯至1993年和1975年; 除了纸版期刊内容外，网站链接、导读功能十分强大, 自2005年11月起，每期还辟有约20分钟纯正美音介绍的Audio Summary；此外，网站还提供麻省医学会的医师继续教育信息。
NEJM的丰富栏目很可能使其影响因子搀杂一些“水份”，即：在影响因子的计算中，引证次数(分子)统计了相应刊物中所有论文被引证的总次数，而刊载论文数(分母)则只统计论文(Articles）、简讯(Notes)和评述(Reviews)类栏目的文章数，对评论(Editorials）、来信(Letters）、通讯(Correspondence)和其他一些常被引证的栏目的文章数目则不进行统计。实际上，这些未被统计的部分的被引证频次对影响因子的贡献很大。Moed的统计表明，1992年The Lancet的“实际”影响因子(论文、报告和评述类论文的实际平均被引证率)比JCR公布的要低43%。
2008年NEJM发表的各类文章约1000篇，JCR只统计了其中的356篇(Original Research, Clinical Cases, Review Articles)，不知道其影响因子中的“水份”有多少 J
(2) 审稿严格 NEJM有非常严格的审稿程序，稿件的处理流程通常为10–12周。该刊每年收稿量近4000篇，(常务)副主编初审和统计学审查的退稿率各为20%左右，通过初审的稿件通常送2–3位同行专家进行评议。退稿的主要原因：稿件在科学性方面有缺陷；相同或类似成果已经发表过；稿件更适合在其他专业期刊发表。
(3) 影响广泛 丰富的信息和高质量的内容当然更容易获得广泛的影响。NEJM的订户分布于177个国家和地区，在美国本土的发行量约为20万份。该刊也吸引了在数量上居全美第一的医师招聘广告，2004年公布的数据显示，该杂志每年刊登医师招聘广告2.4万多条。分类广告按照刊登次数的多少给予价格优惠(现有标准是平均每词5美元，如果让字体加粗、醒目，则需要额外付费)。
(4) 体系完善 为确保NEJM的良好运作，麻省医学会设立了全面细致、分工明确的编辑、出版与管理体系，相关的机构与人员有：
(i) 出版委员会，隶属于麻省医学会，设主席、副主席各1位，委员10位。
(ii) 科学编辑：Editor-in-Chief，Executive Editor和Senior Deputy Editor and Online Editor各1名；Deputy Editors 7名，Associate Editors 10名；另有1名Managing Editor, 3名Statistical Consultants，1名Perspective Editor，1名Book Review Editor，3名National Correspondents，2名Medical Education Editor，2名; Deputy Online Editor，1名Editor-at-Large
(iii) 编委会：共有18名成员，分别来自美、英、日、荷、加、中等国(来自中国的编委为中华医学会杂志社的照日格图先生)。
(iv) 编辑体系(Editorial System)：Director of Editorial Systems, Manager of Editorial Office Services, Manager of Editorial Administration, Manager of Editorial Systems Workflow各1位；Assistants to the Editor 2位；Senior Editorial Coordinator, Perspective Researcher各1位；Editorial Assistants 5位; Manuscript Assistant 1位，Assistants to the Editor 2位。
